Data engineers recruiting
Data engineers build the pipelines, stores and platforms that turn raw data into something analysts, models and applications can use.
On intelligence and defense programs the data is mission data inside accredited environments; at civilian agencies it is program and benefits data governed by privacy law; in commercial products it is the product itself. Recruiters Workforce recruits data engineers for all three, with the clearance line deciding which pool a requisition draws from.
What data engineers do
The work covers ingestion from sensors, systems and partners, transformation and quality, batch and streaming pipelines, warehouse and lakehouse design, orchestration, and the access controls and lineage that governance requires. SQL and Python are universal; Spark, Kafka and the cloud providers' managed data services appear on most requisitions, with the classified programs naming their own platforms. Data engineers increasingly support machine learning teams by building the feature and training data pipelines those teams depend on.
Requisitions name the platforms and the scale, whether the role is inside a classified environment, and the privacy or handling rules the data carries.
Certifications commonly requested
Data engineering requisitions name cloud and platform credentials, and the issuing bodies describe them as follows.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate
- Exam SAA-C03, 65 questions in 130 minutes; AWS recommends one year of hands-on design experience. Requested where the data platform runs on AWS.
- Google Professional Cloud Architect
- A two-hour exam; Google recommends three or more years of industry experience including one or more years designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud. Requested on Google Cloud data platforms.
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator
- A two-hour performance-based test from the command line. Requested where the pipelines run on a container platform the engineer helps operate.
- CompTIA Security+
- Requested on Department of Defense programs where the data engineer holds privileged access to platform systems. Current version V7.
Clearance levels commonly required
Intelligence community data positions require TS/SCI, commonly with a counterintelligence polygraph, and defense mission data positions require Secret or Top Secret. Civilian agency and health data positions are Public Trust and carry privacy obligations that the requisition should name. Commercial positions require no clearance, and they are the largest source of candidates whom contractors sponsor for defense data programs.
Engagement models that fit
Platform builds and migrations suit contract staffing and contract-to-hire, and data teams with approved headcount hire directly. Retained search is used for heads of data engineering and data architects on large programs. The engagement models page compares them.

Questions about recruiting data engineers
Which data engineering skills do cleared requisitions name most?
SQL and Python, Spark, streaming with Kafka or a managed equivalent, orchestration, and experience with the cloud provider's data services in a government region. Intelligence requisitions add the program's own platforms, which are described at interview rather than in the posting. The submittal records the platforms the candidate has worked on and at what scale.
Are data engineers hired for machine learning programs?
Yes, and the demand is growing. Machine learning teams on federal programs depend on engineers who can build and govern the training and feature pipelines, and requisitions for those seats name the model tooling alongside the data platform. Clearance and on-site terms follow the program.
