Cleared IT recruiting in Austin, Texas

Austin is the home market of Recruiters Workforce and a mixed one: an Army command headquarters, the state's military headquarters at Camp Mabry, a Department of Defense research laboratory on the University of Texas campus, and a commercial technology base built on semiconductors and software.

Cleared requisitions here are fewer than in San Antonio but growing with the Army's presence, and non-cleared technical requisitions are among the most numerous in the state.

The firm's office is on Balcones Drive in northwest Austin, and every Austin requisition is worked with the local knowledge that implies: which employers sit on which side of the river, what the commute from Round Rock or Cedar Park costs in time, and which candidates will accept a move to a site on the east side.

Installations, agencies and employers that shape hiring in Austin

The organizations below shape Austin's cleared and technical market. They are named as facts about the area; none is a client of the firm.

  • Army Transformation and Training Command

On October 2, 2025 the Army deactivated Army Futures Command at a ceremony in the LBJ Auditorium on the University of Texas campus and activated the Transformation and Training Command, combining the former Futures Command and Training and Doctrine Command. The command states that its headquarters is in Austin, with additional offices in nearby Round Rock.

  • Camp Mabry and the Texas Military Department

The Texas Military Department is headquartered at 2200 West 35th Street on Camp Mabry in central Austin, with the mission of providing the Governor and the President with ready and trained forces in support of the citizens of Texas and state and federal authorities.

  • Applied Research Laboratories, The University of Texas at Austin

A Department of Defense university affiliated research center with four research divisions: Advanced Technology, Environmental Sciences, Signal and Information Sciences, and Space and Geophysics. Its work is the reason cleared acoustics, signal processing and geophysics requisitions appear in a city with no large installation.

  • Samsung Austin Semiconductor

Samsung built its Austin site in 1996 and states that it has invested more than 18 billion dollars operating two fabs on the Austin campus since then. Its Taylor fab, northeast of Austin, is expected to be operational by the end of 2026 and is designed to produce 2-nanometer chips with extreme ultraviolet lithography.

  • Apple's North Austin campus

Apple announced in December 2018 an investment of one billion dollars to build a 133-acre campus in North Austin, initially accommodating 5,000 additional employees with capacity for 15,000, and stated that Austin already held its largest population of employees outside Cupertino.

Commuting and remote work around Austin

Austin's commute is decided by Interstate 35 and the toll network built to get around it. TxDOT's Central Texas Turnpike System includes SH 130 on the east side, which provides a bypass around I-35 congestion, the tolled segment of Loop 1, MoPac, from Parmer Lane to SH 45 North, the 13-mile SH 45 North linking the northern suburbs between US 183 and SH 130, and SH 45 Southeast connecting SH 130 to I-35 near Buda. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority operates the 183A, 290 and 71 toll roads, the MoPac Express Lanes, 45SW and the 183 Toll and Express Lanes.

CapMetro's Red Line, Route 550, runs ten stations from downtown Austin to Leander, Monday through Saturday, and serves the northwest corridor where Round Rock and Cedar Park candidates live. Camp Mabry, the Army command's offices and the semiconductor campuses are spread across the north and northeast, so a requisition should state the site rather than the city.

Commercial technology employers in Austin offer more remote and hybrid work than any other group of employers on this site, which sets candidate expectations. Cleared work at the Army command and the research laboratory is on site, and a cleared requisition that states the days on site up front avoids losing candidates who have been fully remote since 2020.

Clearance levels commonly requested in Austin

Most Austin requisitions carry no clearance line. Requisitions supporting the Army command, the Texas Military Department and the research laboratory commonly ask for Secret, with Top Secret for program offices and intelligence-adjacent work, and TS/SCI requisitions are usually worked from Austin for other markets. No Austin agency publishes a polygraph requirement, and candidates with a polygraph are more often placed in San Antonio.

Because Austin's cleared pool is smaller than San Antonio's, employers here more often sponsor a strong non-cleared engineer for a Secret investigation and start them on unclassified work. The requisition should say whether the program allows that.

Questions about hiring in Austin

Does Recruiters Workforce meet Austin candidates and hiring managers in person?

Where it helps, yes. The office is on Balcones Drive in northwest Austin, and screening calls and hiring manager meetings are held by phone or video first, with in-person meetings at the employer's site by arrangement. The process is the same one used for every other market on this site.

Which Austin employers hire cleared staff?

The Army's Transformation and Training Command and the contractors that support it, the Texas Military Department at Camp Mabry, and the Applied Research Laboratories on the university's research campus, together with the Austin offices of defense contractors that support programs elsewhere. Commercial technology employers in the city rarely require a clearance.
