Systems engineers recruiting
Systems engineers turn a program's mission into requirements, architecture, interfaces, verification and the trade studies in between.
On defense, space and intelligence programs the discipline is formal: requirements are traced, interfaces are controlled, and integration and test are planned before the first hardware arrives. Recruiters Workforce recruits systems engineers at every level, including the model-based systems engineering practitioners that newer programs require.
What systems engineers do
The engineer elicits and manages requirements, develops the system architecture and its interfaces, runs trade studies, plans and executes integration and test, and supports reviews from system requirements through critical design and test readiness. On space programs the work includes mission analysis and spacecraft or ground segment architecture; on weapon and sensor programs it includes performance modeling and verification against specifications. Model-based systems engineering with SysML and the program's tool of choice appears on a growing share of requisitions.
Requisitions name the domain, the life cycle phase, the tools, and the reviews the engineer will support, and they set the labor category by degree and years, often requiring an engineering degree.
Certifications commonly requested
Systems engineering requisitions rely more on degrees and program experience than on certifications, but three credentials appear.
- INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional
- The International Council on Systems Engineering's professional certification, requested on defense and space programs that follow INCOSE's handbook; the council also offers the Associate and Expert levels.
- ISC2 CISSP
- Requested for security systems engineers who design and assess the security architecture of a system; requires five years of cumulative experience in two or more of the eight domains, with a degree or approved credential satisfying up to one year.
- CompTIA SecurityX
- CompTIA's advanced credential for security architects and senior security engineers, exam CAS-005, launched December 17, 2024. Requested for security architecture positions on Department of Defense programs.
- CompTIA Security+
- Requested where the systems engineer holds privileged access to program systems. Current version V7.
Clearance levels commonly required
Defense programs require Secret for most systems engineering and Top Secret for program offices, and space and intelligence programs require TS/SCI, with the National Reconnaissance Office requiring a counterintelligence polygraph for all of its positions. Because much of the work is on site in program facilities, the requisition should state the site and the days on site. Systems engineers with a current TS/SCI and space or sensor experience are among the hardest requisitions in the market to fill, and programs that will accept a current Top Secret holder and sponsor SCI access fill them sooner.
Engagement models that fit
Integration and test campaigns suit contract staffing, and programs expecting headcount on award use contract-to-hire. Direct hire fits engineering organizations with approved headcount and key personnel positions. Retained search fits chief engineers and lead architects on large programs. The engagement models page compares them.

Questions about recruiting systems engineers
Do systems engineering requisitions require an engineering degree?
Most labor categories do, and many specify an accredited engineering or physics degree with a set number of years, because the contract prices the position that way. Some allow additional experience in place of a degree. The requisition summary should state the contract's rule so that only billable candidates are submitted.
How is model-based systems engineering experience assessed?
At screening the candidate describes the models they have built, the tool and language used, and how the models were used in reviews, and the submittal records it. Programs that have adopted the discipline want practitioners who have delivered a model that a review board relied on, and they say so in the requisition.
