Defense and aerospace recruiting
Defense and aerospace employers hire against contracts: a labor category, a clearance level, a work location tied to a program office or a depot, and a period of performance.
Recruiters Workforce recruits software, systems, embedded and RF engineers, cybersecurity analysts, information system security officers, network and cloud engineers and program managers for prime contractors, their subcontractors and the engineering firms around the major installations.
The work is on site more often than in other industries because so much of it is classified or controlled. A requisition that states the clearance level, the program, the site and whether temporary eligibility is acceptable can be sourced the day it arrives.
Who hires in defense and aerospace
The employers below describe the shape of the market. They are named as facts about where defense and aerospace work is done, and none is a client of the firm.
-
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Fort Worth, Texas
Air Force Plant 4 in west Fort Worth began operations in 1942 and is the center of the F-35 program; Lockheed Martin reported that its Fort Worth workforce delivered a record 191 fighter jets in 2025. Bell Textron is headquartered in Fort Worth, and L3Harris runs more than 3.7 million square feet of aircraft modification and testing space in Greenville, east of Dallas.
-
Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama
The garrison lists Army Materiel Command, Army Aviation and Missile Command, the Missile Defense Agency, the Space and Missile Defense Command, Program Executive Office Missiles and Space, Program Executive Office Aviation, the Redstone Test Center and the Defense Intelligence Agency's Missile and Space Intelligence Center among its tenants, alongside NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Cummings Research Park next door houses about 300 companies and organizations.
-
The National Capital Region
Northrop Grumman's corporate headquarters is in Falls Church, Virginia, RTX is headquartered in Arlington, and Boeing keeps its corporate offices near Washington. SAIC and CACI are headquartered in Reston and ManTech in Herndon. Fort Belvoir hosts the Defense Logistics Agency, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the Missile Defense Agency and more than 60 other units, and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority notes that four of the five largest defense contractors are based in the region.
-
Hampton Roads and shipbuilding
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, designs, builds and maintains nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines and reports more than 26,000 employees. NATO's Allied Command Transformation is headquartered in Norfolk, and NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton has run aeronautics research since 1917.
-
Depots and air logistics complexes
The Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex at Tinker Air Force Base performs depot maintenance on the KC-46, KC-135, B-1B, B-52, E-3 and Navy E-6 fleets and overhauls nine engine types, and Boeing employs more than 3,700 people in Oklahoma City modifying military aircraft. Hill Air Force Base in northern Utah is an Air Force Materiel Command base hosted by the 75th Air Base Wing, and Northrop Grumman's Sentinel program, the modernization of the land-based leg of the nuclear triad, is managed from a workforce that its own page places in Roy, Utah.
-
Missiles, space defense and launch
United Launch Alliance's manufacturing, assembly and integration operations are in Decatur, Alabama, and its launch operations at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Vandenberg Space Force Base. Lockheed Martin reports more than 14,000 employees in Colorado across Denver, Boulder, Littleton and Colorado Springs, and Raytheon's North Texas sites in McKinney and Richardson build radars, electro-optics and high-energy lasers.
Clearances and access in defense and aerospace
Most engineering and IT positions on defense programs require a Secret eligibility on day one, with Top Secret for program offices and intelligence-adjacent work and TS/SCI for space, signals and special access programs. Employers holding a facility clearance can sponsor a candidate who is eligible but not yet cleared, and many will accept a temporary eligibility for Secret work, so the requisition should state whether that is acceptable.
Two compliance regimes shape the cybersecurity hiring on these programs. DFARS 252.204-7012 requires covered contractor information systems to meet NIST SP 800-171 and requires cyber incidents to be reported to the Department of Defense within 72 hours of discovery. The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program, codified at 32 CFR Part 170 and effective December 16, 2024, sets three levels, with Level 2 built on the 110 requirements of NIST SP 800-171; the acquisition rule at DFARS 252.204-7021 took effect on November 10, 2025 with a three-year phased rollout. Contractors are hiring the ISSOs, security engineers and compliance analysts who will carry those assessments.

Markets with defense and aerospace hiring
Engagement models that fit
Contract staffing fits task orders and surge work with a defined period of performance, and contract-to-hire fits programs that expect permanent headcount on award. Direct hire is the norm for positions the prime must carry on its own payroll, including key personnel named in a proposal. Retained search is used for chief engineers, program managers on large task orders and directors of cybersecurity, where the pool of cleared candidates is small enough to be mapped rather than advertised. The engagement models page compares them.
Questions about defense and aerospace recruiting
Can a candidate be submitted for a defense program before the contract is awarded?
Yes, as a contingent search tied to award. The candidate is told that the start depends on award and the submittal records the availability window. Proposal support of this kind is common on recompetes, and it works best when the labor categories and clearance levels are fixed in the solicitation, because they decide who can be submitted.
How does CMMC change what a defense subcontractor asks for?
The program's acquisition rule took effect on November 10, 2025, with CMMC requirements included in selected contracts during a three-year rollout and applied more widely thereafter, and contracting officers may not award to an offeror without the required CMMC status. Subcontractors that handle controlled unclassified information are therefore recruiting information system security officers and compliance analysts who know NIST SP 800-171, and requisitions increasingly name that standard by number.
