Federal health IT recruiting
Federal health IT covers the electronic health record shared by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Military Health System, the claims and coverage systems of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the research systems of the National Institutes of Health, the Indian Health Service, and the medical centers that use them.
Recruiters Workforce recruits business analysts, systems administrators, cloud and data engineers, IT support technicians, IT program managers and information system security officers for the contractors delivering those programs.
Most positions are Public Trust, and every one of them works under the HIPAA Security Rule. The hiring calendar follows the Federal EHR deployment schedule, which names the medical centers going live year by year.
Who hires in federal health IT
The programs and agencies below describe the federal health IT market. They are named as facts and none is a client of the firm.

The Federal EHR
MHS GENESIS is the Military Health System's electronic health record, described by the Department of Defense as a single health record for service members, veterans and their families, serving 9.5 million beneficiaries and 205,000 medical providers when fully deployed. The Department of Veterans Affairs is deploying the same Federal EHR to all 170 of its medical centers by November 2031; as of February 2026 it was in use at six VA medical centers, 26 associated clinics and 104 remote services, with thirteen medical centers scheduled to go live in 2026 and 26 in 2027, after the first site, Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane, went live on October 24, 2020.

The Defense Health Agency
The Defense Health Agency supports uniformed services health care, including the TRICARE health plan. Its programs and the military treatment facilities they serve sit next to the installations named on the metro pages, from Naval Support Activity Bethesda to the medical centers at Joint Base San Antonio.

CMS, HHS, NIH and IHS
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services provides health coverage to more than 160 million people through Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Health Insurance Marketplace. The Department of Health and Human Services protects the health of all Americans, the National Institutes of Health is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research, and the Indian Health Service provides federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.

The VA Dayton Healthcare System and the Omaha VA Medical Center anchor their markets, and the Texas Medical Center in Houston describes itself as the largest medical complex in the world.

The security rule
The HIPAA Security Rule requires regulated entities to safeguard electronic protected health information through administrative, physical and technical safeguards against reasonably anticipated threats, hazards and impermissible uses or disclosures, as NIST Special Publication 800-66 Revision 2 explains for implementers.
Clearances and access in federal health IT
Positions on VA, CMS, NIH and IHS programs are designated under 5 CFR Part 731 and are mostly Public Trust positions at moderate or high risk, investigated on the SF-85P. Defense Health Agency and Military Health System programs are Department of Defense programs, and some of their positions require a Secret eligibility. No federal health IT position requires SCI access in the ordinary course, which keeps the candidate pool wide.
Every requisition in this industry carries HIPAA obligations, and many carry the agency's own privacy and security training requirements. The submittal records the candidate's experience with electronic health record platforms, claims systems and the HIPAA Security Rule, and any prior federal suitability investigation.

Engagement models that fit
Electronic health record deployments run to a published schedule, which suits contract staffing for go-live waves and contract-to-hire for training, support and analyst seats that continue after a site is live. Direct hire fits program management offices and data teams with approved headcount. Retained search fits program directors on large VA and CMS modernization contracts. The engagement models page compares them.
Questions about federal health IT recruiting
Does experience with a commercial hospital system transfer to the Federal EHR?
Largely, yes. Analysts and trainers who have worked deployments of a commercial electronic health record bring the workflow, testing and change management experience the federal program needs, and the Public Trust screening replaces the clearance that would otherwise be a barrier. The submittal states the platform and the deployment role so that the hiring manager can judge the fit.
Where is federal health IT hiring concentrated?
Around the VA medical centers scheduled to go live, the program offices in the National Capital Region, and the metros with large military treatment facilities and medical campuses: Tampa, Orlando, Denver and Aurora, Dayton, Omaha, Houston and San Antonio.
