Cloud engineers recruiting
Cloud engineers design, build and operate the environments on which federal and commercial systems now run: the commercial and government regions of AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, the FedRAMP-authorized platforms built on them, and the classified regions available to cleared programs.
Recruiters Workforce recruits cloud engineers and architects for agencies' contractors, defense primes, FedRAMP platform providers and commercial employers.
What cloud engineers do
The work covers landing zones and account structures, identity and access, networking between regions and on-premises systems, infrastructure as code, cost and capacity management, and the controls evidence an authorization requires. On a federal program the engineer maps NIST SP 800-53 controls to cloud services and produces the artifacts for an authorization to operate; on a FedRAMP platform the engineer keeps the authorization current through continuous monitoring. Migrations from data centers to cloud regions remain a large share of the requisitions.
Requisitions name the provider and the region, the infrastructure-as-code tool, and whether the role is architecture, build or operations. Government region experience, and for defense programs experience with the higher impact levels, is stated explicitly because it narrows the candidate pool.
Certifications commonly requested
Cloud requisitions name provider credentials by exam code, and the issuing bodies publish the experience they expect.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate and Professional
- The Associate exam SAA-C03 runs 130 minutes with 65 questions, and AWS recommends at least one year of hands-on AWS design experience. The Professional exam SAP-C02 runs 180 minutes with 75 questions, for candidates with two or more years designing and implementing AWS solutions; a new SAP-C03 exam opens for registration on October 27, 2026, with SAP-C02 available through November 17, 2026.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate and Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- The Administrator credential is earned through exam AZ-104, a 100-minute proctored exam renewed every twelve months. The Solutions Architect Expert credential requires exam AZ-305 and the Azure Administrator Associate certification as a prerequisite.
- Google Professional Cloud Architect
- A two-hour exam; Google recommends three or more years of industry experience including one or more years designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud.
- CompTIA Cloud+
- CompTIA's vendor-neutral cloud infrastructure certification, at version V4, exam code CV0-004, requested on multi-cloud programs and by employers that do not specify a provider.
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator
- A two-hour performance-based test from the command line. Requested where the cloud engineer also runs the container platform.
Clearance levels commonly required
Civilian and health IT cloud positions are mostly Public Trust. Defense programs running in government regions require Secret, and programs in classified regions require Top Secret or TS/SCI, with the work done on site. FedRAMP platform providers hire without a clearance requirement, which makes them a training ground for engineers moving toward cleared programs. The requisition summary should state the region and impact level, because a candidate's experience with them is checked at screening.
Engagement models that fit
Cloud migrations suit contract staffing and contract-to-hire, and platform and architecture seats with approved headcount suit direct hire. Retained search is used for cloud architects with FedRAMP or classified region experience and for heads of cloud engineering. The engagement models page compares them.

Questions about recruiting cloud engineers
Which cloud certification do federal requisitions ask for most?
The AWS Solutions Architect credentials appear most often, followed by the Azure Administrator and Solutions Architect Expert credentials on programs that run on Azure Government. Many defense requisitions add Security+ because the engineer holds privileged access. The certifications are confirmed with the issuing body at screening.
Does FedRAMP experience substitute for a clearance?
It does not, because a clearance is an eligibility determination made by the government and FedRAMP is a platform authorization. FedRAMP experience does, however, make a candidate valuable to civilian programs that require only Public Trust screening, and it shortens the learning curve on the controls a cleared program will also require.
