Cleared IT recruiting in Honolulu, Hawaii

Oahu is the headquarters island of the Indo-Pacific.

Submit a requisitionSend your résumé

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command is headquartered at Camp H. M. Smith above Pearl Harbor, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam hosts the Pacific Fleet, Pacific Air Forces and the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Schofield Barracks is home to the 25th Infantry Division, Fort Shafter is home to U.S. Army Pacific, Marine Corps Base Hawaii sits on the windward side at Kaneohe Bay, and NSA Hawaii's operations center near Wahiawa opened in 2012. The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu is a Department of War regional center. Requisitions run from Secret for installation IT and engineering support to TS/SCI with polygraph at the cryptologic center.

The island's three interstates, H-1, H-2 and H-3, and the Skyline rail line decide the commute, and a requisition must state its installation, because the drive from Kapolei to Kaneohe or from Honolulu to Wahiawa is measured in hours at peak times.

Installations, agencies and employers that shape hiring in Honolulu

The organizations below shape the Honolulu market. They are named as facts about the area; none is a client of the firm.

  • U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and its components

The command's headquarters is the Nimitz-MacArthur Pacific Command Center on Camp H. M. Smith, and its component commands are headquartered at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for the Pacific Fleet, Pacific Air Forces and Space Forces Indo-Pacific, at Fort Shafter for U.S. Army Pacific, and at Camp H. M. Smith for Marine Forces Pacific.

  • Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

Formed by a 2010 merger as one of the joint bases created by the 2005 base realignment, the base hosts the Pacific Fleet, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, the 15th Wing, the Hawaii Air National Guard's 154th Wing and the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, one of four public shipyards operated by the Navy, about eight miles from Honolulu.

  • Schofield Barracks, Fort Shafter and Marine Corps Base Hawaii

U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii lists the 25th Infantry Division among its major tenant units at Schofield Barracks, adjacent to Wahiawa on central Oahu, and Fort Shafter in Honolulu is the headquarters of U.S. Army Pacific. Marine Corps Base Hawaii is on the Mokapu Peninsula of windward Oahu, reached by the H-3 freeway.

  • NSA Hawaii

NSA/CSS broke ground for its new operations facility at NSA Hawaii on August 30, 2007 and marked completion of the regional operations center, officially named the Captain Joseph J. Rochefort Building, at a January 6, 2012 ribbon-cutting, citing a 358 million dollar project. The center near Wahiawa is one of NSA's four cryptologic centers.

  • The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies and Hawaiian Electric

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, at 2058 Maluhia Road in Honolulu, is a Department of War regional center dedicated to Indo-Pacific security challenges. Hawaiian Electric, established in 1891 and headquartered on Bishop Street, serves 95 percent of the state's 1.4 million residents across five islands and runs the grid the installations depend on.

  • Ranges and sites on the other islands

The Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands on Kauai is described as the world's largest instrumented, multi-dimensional testing and training missile range, and the Maui Space Surveillance Complex on Haleakala is a Space Force operating location for the 15th Space Surveillance Squadron and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Commuting and remote work around Honolulu

Interstate H-1 runs 27.15 miles from Kapolei to Kahala and is the island's longest and busiest interstate, H-2 runs 8.32 miles north from H-1 toward Wahiawa and Schofield Barracks, and H-3 runs 15.32 miles from the Halawa interchange near Pearl Harbor through the Koolau tunnels to the gate of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, according to the federal route log. The Hawaii Department of Transportation lists active H-1 and H-2 pavement rehabilitation, H-1 viaduct improvements at Pearl City and Waimalu, and H-201 Moanalua Freeway paving between the H-3 ramp and the Fort Shafter overpass.

TheBus, operated by Oahu Transit Services for the City and County of Honolulu, runs the island's bus network, and Skyline, the city's rail line, opened its first segment in June 2023 and its second, past Pearl Harbor and the airport, in October 2025, with the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation reporting the extension to the Civic Center at 71.3 percent complete and a March 2031 readiness date.

Command, fleet, shipyard and cryptologic work is on site without exception. Contractors around the installations follow the program's policy, and Hawaiian Electric and the commercial employers offer hybrid arrangements for some positions; a requisition should state its policy and its installation.

Clearance levels commonly requested in Honolulu

Requisitions supporting the command and its components ask for Top Secret and TS/SCI, installation IT, engineering and shipyard support asks for Secret, and NSA Hawaii's requisitions carry the agency's requirements, whose suitability process includes a polygraph. The Intelligence Community's careers site notes that some agencies require a polygraph and puts the clearance process at nine to twelve months on average.

Hawaii's posting rules apply to every one of them: an hourly rate or salary range in listings by employers with fifty or more employees, no salary history questions, conviction questions only after a conditional offer, and no non-compete or non-solicit clauses in the employment contracts of technology businesses.

Questions about hiring in Honolulu

Do mainland candidates relocate to Oahu for cleared positions?

Some do, for the command's programs and the cryptologic center, and the submittal records a candidate's willingness to move and the relocation terms the employer offers. Most installation IT and engineering support requisitions are filled from the island's own pool, which is deep in network and systems staff.

Which Oahu requisitions carry a polygraph?

Those supporting NSA Hawaii, where the agency's own suitability process includes one, and some intelligence programs at the command. Installation, fleet and shipyard support requisitions ask for Secret or TS/SCI without it. The requisition summary should say which examination applies and whether the program will sponsor it.
